Hike #11 Quarry to Mountainview, Beamsville

Quarry Rd (Lincoln) to Mountainview Rd (Beamsville)

We started at Quarry Road.  There is roadside parking for 6 cars.  We concluded our hike today at Mountainview Conservation Area (parking lot). There are no washroom facilities at either location.

From Quarry Road we entered the Bruce Trail through some woods.  The terrain was easy to moderate, with some short climbs and descents.

Bridge crossing a small tributary of Bartlett creek.

This section of the Bruce Trail mainly stayed on the top of the escarpment, traversing shelves of pockmarked limestone that were riddled with groves and fissures.  From time-to-time we found our selves leap-frogging from one island of rock to the next.

An example of the many pockmarked limestone ridges encountered on this section of the trail.

Another day, another boulder encountered.

The Bruce trail continues through Kinsmen Park, which is situated at the top of escarpment in southern Beamsville.  In this area you will find many small walls or ridges of limestone running through the woods.  We encountered a strange box on the side of a tree - courtesy of the Bruce Trail Conservancy.

Screw loose?  Not to worry!  We have you covered.

There is ample parking at Kinsmen Park - accessible via Kinsmen Rd.  There are several side trails here as well.  The lower side trails are accessible by staircase.

The Bruce Trail continues passed the top of this staircase to re-enter the woods at the opposite end of Kinsmen Park.

After passing through Kinsmen park, the trail enters some woods that gradually gave way to meadows.  The trail eventually spills out onto Mountain Road at the junction with Leonard Crescent.  The trail continues to the end of Leonard Cres., where it re-enters the woods, passing through a very short section of private land.

The woods here are dominated by a large ravine.  The trail begins at the top of the ravine, then takes a hairpin turn to descend on the opposite side of the ravine.  From these woods, you can view a nearby vineyard.  The trail eventually opens onto the edge of this vineyard.

The descent on the opposite side of the ravine will bring you to the base of the escarpment where the trail skirts the edges of a vineyard.

After exiting the ravine and skirting the nearby vineyard, the Bruce Trail will continue at the edge of a tract of farmland to descend into another set of woods.

After descending into the woods, and passing by some abandoned and overgrown grape fields, the trail ascends a hill which opens onto Locust Lane.

View of grape vines at the Locust Lane Winery - Lake Ontario can be seen in the distance.

At the end of the laneway we encountered a sign that provides directions to other wineries in the Beamsville area.

These signs are common in this part of the Niagara wine region.

The Bruce Trail follows Locust Lane westward, passing by several other wineries along the way.

The Bruce Trail then turns north along Mountainview Road to end up at the parking lot for the Mountainview Conservation area.

Just one of several wineries we passed on Mountainview Road in Grimsby.
