Hike #14: Cline Mountain Road to Lewis Road, Winona

Cline Mountain Rd, Grimsby to Lewis Rd, Winona

We started todays hike at Cline Mountain Rd. There is roadside parking and then a 360m side trail climbing up the escarpment to reach the Bruce Trail. We parked our second car at the south end of Lewis Rd, at the base of the escarpment, in Winona. There are no washroom facilities along this portion of the trail.

A portion of the Cline Mountain access trail (360m climb).  This section of the trail begins in Woolverton Conservation Area.

This section of the Bruce Trail wasn't the most interesting compared to some of the other sections we've hiked so far. As you can see from the picture below we were contending with wet conditions. This combined with the rocky terrain made for a very slippery hike.

Sections of the trail turned into miniature streams owing to the runoff generated by days of constant rain.

One of many small streams we encountered on this section of the trail.

The upside to all the rain we've been having is that the streams running down the escarpment were quite pretty.  Much of this section of our trek ran through Winona Conservation Area.

The trail crosses Fifty road at a blind corner. Be careful as this road is quite busy.

Bridge on the West side of 50 Rd.

The trail continues fairly level through the woods approximately half way between the top and the base of the escarpment.  Along the way we were treated to views of the rocks above and the town of Winona below.

View of Winona and Lake Ontario.  The street running North-South towards Lake Ontario is Winona Rd.

The leaves were just starting to turn in some parts of the woods and the wet conditions were just right for mushrooms.  This part of the trail contained some small climbs and descents.  Some sections were 'paved' with flat rocks from the escarpment.

We frequently encountered these types of mushrooms.  Some were quite tall and spread out.

We took the Lewis Road Side Trail to get back to our car. It is approximately 1km and descends through multiple switchbacks to the base of the escarpment.

Base of Lewis Rd side trail.  There is still approximately 200m to the end of Lewis Rd where we parked our car.

The base of the Lewis Rd side trail passes between the fields of two properties.

The light at the end of the tunnel! The end of the Lewis Rd side trail can be seen in the distance.
